Wiki-Solar: Global Utility Level Photovoltaic Installed Capacity Increases By 183GW in 2024

According to the solar project tracking website Wiki Solar, the global installed capacity of utility grade photovoltaics has accumulated close to 800GW (AC)/1.000GW (DC), with an additional 182.7GW (AC) installed in 2024. The cumulative installed capacity of utility grade photovoltaics in 33 major markets worldwide has reached 756GW (AC), accounting for 93% of the global total.

Wiki Solar's statistical caliber is for photovoltaic power plants of 4MW (AC) and above, and points out that the new installed capacity data for 2024 is still a preliminary estimate, as it is still awaiting Q4 data updates from markets such as China.

The Asian market remains in a leading position, mainly driven by the continued push from the Chinese and Indian markets. In 2024, China will add 80.7GW (AC) of utility level photovoltaic installed capacity (according to data from the National Energy Administration, China will add about 159GW of centralized photovoltaic capacity in 2024), with a cumulative installed capacity of 320.1GW (DC), continuing to lead the world. The United States ranks second with an additional 39GW (AC) and a total installed capacity of 132.9GW (AC). India ranks third with an increase of 24.3GW (AC) and a total installed capacity of 83.1GW (AC).

After a slump in the European market from 2018 to 2022, the pace of installation will accelerate in 2024. Spain and Germany have respectively added 5.5GW (AC) and 4.5GW (AC) of utility grade photovoltaic installed capacity, becoming the main growth drivers in the region.

Wiki Solar pointed out that the installed capacity of utility grade photovoltaics in South America is steadily increasing, with countries such as Chile and Brazil continuing to promote their installation. Among them, Brazil has become the largest market in South America due to its rapid expansion in 2023 and 2024.

In addition, Saudi Arabia, Poland, and Portugal have also made significant progress in 2024, with cumulative installed capacity in this field reaching 3.9GW (AC), 2.5GW (AC), and 3.7GW (AC), respectively.

Wiki Solar founder Philip Wolfe predicts that the total installed capacity of utility grade photovoltaics worldwide will exceed 1TW (AC) by 2025.
